What was best practice in 2020 doesn't always apply in 2025. Multi-process machines have gotten good enough that a single welder can handle MIG, TIG, and stick without being a compromise. That changes the math for a small shop. The fundamentals haven't changed, but the execution has.

1. Match the Machine to the Processes You Actually Run

The first question I ask is simple: what are we actually welding this month? If the work is mostly mild steel with MIG, a single-process machine might make more sense than a multi-process unit. But our workload shifts. One week we're doing aluminum TIG for a custom railing job, and the next week we're on structural steel. Those search phrases don't tell me what I need to know. “Visa welder” could return anything from a used inverter to a knockoff. “RMD welding machine” is usually shorthand for a MIG unit with regulated metal deposition features, but it's not a model. Give me the actual machine spec, and we're good.

When we order, I like to bundle the machine with gloves, contact tips, wire, and eye protection through one supplier.
