Here's the short version: if you're buying a TIG welder for a general shop and aluminum work isn't a weekly thing, buy a DC-only machine and spend the rest on a better torch, gas system, and PPE. If aluminum work is coming—or already in the shop—buy an AC/DC TIG machine and don't look back. That decision matters more than the brand, in my opinion.

What most people don't realize is that 'AC/DC' on the spec sheet isn't the same as 'better.' AC mode is primarily for aluminum and magnesium. It breaks up the oxide layer on the surface. If you never weld those metals, AC is just a feature that adds cost and a few extra knobs to play with. That doesn't make the machine worse—it makes it more expensive. The question is whether the flexibility is worth real money to you.

AC is for aluminum. DC is for steel, stainless, and most repair work. That's basically the whole technology story. If you weld aluminum once a month, you can get by with a rental or an add-on job done by a local shop. If you weld aluminum once a week, buy the AC/DC machine.

A DC-only machine on steel usually gives a more focused, stable arc because there's no alternating wave fighting the puddle. If you're an experienced TIG welder who airbends and changes processes weekly, you don't need a checklist from an administrator.
